Every platform counts a "post" differently. Some count emoji as one character, others as two. Some count URLs at their full length, X normalizes every URL to 23 characters. Pasting your draft into the counter above gives you accurate per-platform counts at the same time — no need to draft once for X and again for LinkedIn.
What is the X (Twitter) character limit?
X allows 280 characters per post for free accounts. Premium subscribers can post up to 25,000 characters. Every URL counts as 23 characters regardless of how long the actual link is, and most emoji count as 2 characters because they take two code units. The counter above mirrors X's tweet-length algorithm so what you see is what X sees.
What is the Instagram caption character limit?
Instagram captions allow up to 2,200 characters, but only the first ~125 characters appear in feed before the "more" link. Lead with the hook. Hashtags also count toward the 2,200 limit and Instagram caps you at 30 hashtags per post.
What is the LinkedIn post character limit?
LinkedIn posts allow up to 3,000 characters. Posts truncate at around 210 characters in the feed before "see more" appears, so the first two lines are doing most of the work. Articles allow 110,000 characters and headlines max out at 220.
What is the TikTok caption character limit?
TikTok captions allow up to 4,000 characters as of the 2023 expansion. Hashtags count toward the limit. Mobile feed truncates captions at around 150 characters with a "more" tap-target.
What is the Threads character limit?
Threads posts allow up to 500 characters. There is no URL shortening — long links eat into the limit at full length, unlike X.
What is the Bluesky character limit?
Bluesky posts allow up to 300 characters. Like Threads, URLs count at their full length. Hashtags are supported but do not yet drive much discovery.
What is the YouTube description character limit?
YouTube video descriptions allow up to 5,000 characters (titles cap at 100). Only the first 100 or so characters appear above the fold. Community posts cap at 1,500 characters.
What is the Pinterest description character limit?
Pinterest pin descriptions allow up to 500 characters (titles cap at 100). The first sentence is what the algorithm uses for keyword matching, so write descriptions like SEO meta-descriptions.
What is the Facebook post character limit?
Facebook allows up to 63,206 characters per post — effectively unlimited — but posts truncate at 477 characters in the feed. Keep the value above the fold.
Tips for writing posts that fit every platform
- Front-load the hook. Most platforms truncate before the limit. The first 120–150 characters carry the post.
- Watch URL counting. X normalizes URLs to 23 chars; Threads and Bluesky don't. A long affiliate link can cost you 80+ chars on those platforms.
- Emoji are not free. On X, most emoji count as 2. On Instagram, emoji typically count as 1.
- Leave room for a CTA. Aim for 80% of the limit so you have space to add a question or link without rewriting.
- Need cross-platform copy? Use our caption templates and bio templates to keep voice consistent.
